Describe something about the exhibition that stood out to you as unique or interesting. How does Murakami's work relate to larger issues in art and design?
I thought that all the works are really high quality even I don't like his works, but I don't understand why people pay a lot of money for his works like $16,000,000 for the sculpture "my lonesome cowboy". It's also a problem for art world. People tend to see artworks as a high price product, not artworks themselves. The price of an artwork and the value of the artwork is totally different. Money tells us nothing about artworks.
His art works reflect such human's emotions as sadness, loneliness, happiness and innocence. I'm really interested in psychology and those of his works seemed to tell us long history and the cycle of inevitable passing emotions that human always go through. But his purpose of merchandising his design into selling kind of let me down . The reason is because I found his works as an innocent figure but then Louis Vuitton bags and wallets in the exihibition gave a kind of thoughts that he is impulsing people's emotions to get more attention. Well.. but basically I liked his works more than I expected.
I think Murakami is not an artist but a businessman. I couldn't believe that there was Louis Vuitton shop in the exhibition. Murakami should not have mixed fine art with commerce. When I entered a room which had too many flowers, I was getting dizzy. Also,I couldn't concentrate on an object due to too many flowers, and it seemed that he makes fun of me. Another thing that I was dissapointed was about all his painting because he didn't show deep artwork. Everything looked childish.
The most important thing of artist is how truly mind keep inside at their own art works. Comparing this, the Murakami exibition let me learn the best way to teach how mix fine art and commerce. I felt very disappointed about his artworks because it seemed like just commercail stuffs for me. In business society, Murakami depends on the interest of popularity, then he made lots of artworks more commercail. Although the mix of the fineart and commerce is needed to live for artist, that aspect is so ironic. I confused what the concept of Murakami's artworks.
I don't like murakami's exibition. because it looks more commercial not the exibition, but I think the Vuitton shop in the middle of the exbition is slightly surprised. Because most exibitions doesn't have boutique or shop in the middle. Even though I think, he well connects between fine art and commerce.
When I saw 'Mr.Pointy' at the entrance of the museum, I felt it came from one of animation as character. I didn't feel it was an fine art exhibition it just looked like brand's show room to show the their character and product. Also, I was wondering about which one was the first between art and merchandise. most people say there is not standard point when they say fine art. However, I think an artist has to respect others and make for everyone. But, if I am mother, I never show my children even though it has childish factors. Artist must keep their thinking and express it but he/she do not need to try to become a special person.
Before I visited his exhibition, I considered him as just a character designer, not an artist. This is because his art work seems not to be serious and he creates childish cute flowers or cartoon characters. However, as I read the articles related to him, before I went to there, I realized that he reflects his own value or philosophy on his work. Whether we object to his trial or not, that is combining the art with money, I think he suggests one way that the artists can pursue.
In general i think hes a very good artist, because of the way he structured the work itself and how clean he mix the colors. Over all i think the piece that most standout to me, was the SUPERNOVA, picture. VEry good manage of balance contrast, and enphasis. ANd its a different way to express the emotions, and how people TODAy feel. everything its happy and shiny and colorfull, BUt is it true?. NOt everything is what it seems to be. ....
Since he has corporated with Louis Vuitton, I see his as a businessman, not an artist. Many customers who purchase Murakami's vuitton collection seem to forget the concept or even don't understand Murakami's original inspiration from Japanese culture. I believe that an artist can not make art for money as his/ her first principle. Murakami makes me confused about his art thorughout his role between a businessman and celebrity.
The only thing I can remember now is smiling face. Thogh he intened to do childish thing, I don't really think it's creative or delicated. Smiling face was not original thing as you know. There can be much more creative or impressive way to express desire of childhood or innocence. I see his woark as refined work of otaku. I felt he is stuck in his thought, which is immature. Immature in ugly way that cause to make many people get sick of it.(even they hadn't seen in the end)It was very predictable exhibition.
Murakami was quite impressive. He stood in the middle of art and business. He has a successful business using his art skills and he has a successful art exhibition with his business shops too. I also liked how he created his characters and how he uses variety of colors. Indeed they all have a GREAT balance.
I did not like Murakami exhibition for several reasons. His work seemed like neither of fine art and commerce. When I went in to the Smiling Flowers room and Pink Eyes room made me to have a headache. I could imagine his room. I also did not like his perfection so I could not feel any human emotion.
As an art student, I didn’t like at all the Murakami’s exhibition. When I was in the show, I felt as being in a shopping center, not as in a Museum. Even tough some people called him the Japanese Andy Warhol; I think that his style is less demanding, he just worked with LV because he only cares about money.
